Are infrared sauna blankets safe? For most healthy adults using a compliant blanket sensibly, yes. The risks that matter are not the ones the internet argues about. Electromagnetic fields get the headlines, but overheating, dehydration and low-temperature burns are the things that actually send people to A&E, and they are all avoidable. There is also a real group of people who should not use one without medical advice first.
This piece separates the genuine risks from the marketing, covers what the EMF numbers mean once you put them next to the published exposure limits, and sets out who should stay out of a blanket entirely.
The EMF question, with actual numbers
Every sauna blanket brand markets “low EMF”, which tells you nothing on its own because almost nobody publishes what the alternative is. So here is the context that the marketing leaves out.
The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection sets the exposure guidelines that UK and European policy works from. For low-frequency magnetic fields at mains frequency, the ICNIRP reference level for general public exposure is 200 microtesla. That is 2,000 milligauss, which is the unit sauna brands prefer to quote in.
Against that ceiling, a well-made blanket measuring around 3 milligauss at the point of skin contact is roughly three orders of magnitude below the public reference level. Even a poorly made unit at 20 to 100 milligauss, which is the range cheap wire-coil heaters land in, remains well under it. The honest position is that EMF from a compliant blanket is not the thing to worry about, and any brand implying that a competitor’s blanket is dangerous on EMF grounds is selling you a fear rather than a fact.
Two caveats keep this honest. First, EMF output genuinely does vary enormously between units, so the difference between brands is real even if the absolute numbers are all low. Second, long-term infrared-specific research is thin: there is no good evidence of harm, but “no evidence of harm” is not the same claim as “proven harmless over thirty years”, and anyone telling you otherwise is overstating what exists.
Burns and heat: the risk that is actually real
This is where blankets deserve genuine caution, and it is the opposite of the EMF conversation: less discussed, more likely to hurt you.
A sauna blanket wraps a heating element directly against your skin, usually with a single fabric layer between. A cabin sauna heats the air around you and you can move away from the heat. In a blanket you cannot, and skin in sustained contact with a warm surface can develop a low-temperature burn well below the temperature most people assume is dangerous. Prolonged contact with something only moderately hot causes tissue damage over time even when it never feels acutely painful.
The practical implications:
- Never use a blanket on bare skin. Long sleeves, long legs, socks. This is not a comfort preference, it is the main burn control.
- Heater type matters. Even heat distribution from carbon fibre elements behaves differently from cheap wire coils, which produce hot spots against the skin.
- Never fall asleep in one. This is the single most dangerous thing you can do with a sauna blanket. You lose the feedback that tells you to get out, and sustained contact is exactly what causes a burn.
- Do not use one on anaesthetised or numb skin, or over an area with reduced sensation from neuropathy, injury or medication. If you cannot feel the heat, you cannot self-regulate.
Overheating is the other half of it. Heat exhaustion and thermal burns are the most common sauna-related injuries generally, and a blanket makes overheating easier than a cabin does because getting out takes longer. You are zipped in, lying down, and the exit is not a door you step through. Set a timer, keep a phone within reach, and treat the zip as something you must always be able to work from inside.
Dehydration and the thirst trap
You lose fluid in a blanket at a rate that a 30-minute session makes easy to underestimate. The trap is that thirst lags behind dehydration, so feeling fine is not evidence of being hydrated. Drink before, not just after, and add fluid on either side of a session rather than trying to catch up at the end.
Alcohol before a session compounds every risk on this page. It impairs thermoregulation, blunts the judgement you rely on to notice you are too hot, and adds to fluid loss. The same caution applies to anything sedating, for the same reason as the sleep warning above.
Who should not use an infrared sauna blanket
Some of these are absolute, some mean “ask your GP first”, and the honest answer is that a consumer wellness product is not the right place to be self-diagnosing which is which.
- Pregnancy. Raising core temperature in pregnancy carries risks. Speak to a midwife or doctor rather than a retailer.
- Cardiovascular conditions. Unstable angina, a recent heart attack and severe aortic stenosis are clear contraindications. Heat puts load on the cardiovascular system, which is the mechanism behind several claimed benefits and also the reason it is not neutral for a damaged heart.
- Implanted devices. Pacemakers and similar devices mean a conversation with a cardiologist first.
- Open wounds, recent burns or active skin infections. Direct contact heat over broken skin is a poor idea.
- Reduced skin sensation from neuropathy, diabetes-related nerve damage or medication.
- Children. Thermoregulation differs, and blankets are not designed or tested around them.
Medication is a genuinely under-discussed factor. Diuretics, beta blockers, antihistamines and some antidepressants all affect how the body handles heat or fluid. If you take something daily, that is worth one question to a pharmacist, who can answer it for free and quickly.
Buying a blanket that is actually safe
Some concrete things to check, none of which are about EMF marketing:
- UKCA or CE marking and a named, contactable UK or EU importer. A product with no traceable responsible party is a product with no recourse.
- An over-temperature cut-out. The controller should shut the unit down if it exceeds its set point, not merely aim for it.
- An auto-off timer that cannot be defeated.
- A zip you can open from inside without contorting.
- A published maximum temperature, not a vague “up to 80°C” claim with no controller accuracy stated.
- A washable, replaceable inner layer, because the thing will absorb sweat and you will want to clean it properly.
If a listing has none of this and leads instead on detox claims and EMF fear, that tells you what the manufacturer has actually engineered for.

How long is a safe session?
Most people should start at around 20 minutes and build up only if they tolerate it well. Longer is not better, and there is no meaningful evidence that an extended session produces a proportionally larger benefit. Use a timer rather than judging by feel, since heat impairs the judgement you would be using.
Is “low EMF” marketing worth paying for?
It is worth having, but not worth a large premium, and it is not a safety cliff. Output varies a great deal between units, so a well-made blanket really is measurably lower than a cheap one.
